About the Trust

The Tywi Gateway Trust was set up as a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (charity number 1167244) in 2016 to:

“promote for the benefit of the public at the Bishop’s Park and its cultural setting in Abergwili the conservation, protection, improvement and understanding of the built and natural environments.”

During the initial stage of the Parc Yr Esgob-Bishop’s Park Project, a £2million National Lottery Heritage Fund supported project to restore the Bishops Park, the Welsh Historic Gardens Trust set up the Trust to deliver the restoration project and take on the future management and maintenance of the park.

In 2018 the  Trust signed 30 year leases with Carmarthenshire County Council and the Representative Body of the Church in Wales for the Old Bishop’s Palace grounds, the Walled Garden and the Great Meadow.  We are responsible for making sure that they continue to be looked after and made accessible to the local community.

The Trust is run by a board of 12 local community Trustees.  Our long term ambition for the site is:

To put Parc Yr Esgob-Bishop’s Park on the map as an outstanding destination for visitors to explore beautiful landscaped gardens, parkland and views across the Tywi valley, discover fascinating wildlife and history, and enjoy the benefits of being outdoors in nature.

At present there are eight members of staff:-

  • Trust Manager – Tina Murphy
  • Head Gardener – Blue Barnes-Thomas
  • Walled Garden Project Manager – Louise Austin
  • Project Co-ordinator – Sarah Dobson
  • Walled Garden Project Community Engagement Officers (Job Share) – Anne May and Teresa Walters
  • Horticultural Trainer/Assistant Gardener – Yvonne Lee

The Trust is a charity and is completely independent of central and local government and receives no direct funding. We are dependent on fundraising through grants and donations alongside income generated at the park and on the generosity of volunteers and supporters to continue our work.
