Unlocking the Secrets of the Walled Kitchen Garden

Two people work beside a mossy stone archway overgrown with ivy. One is bending down, the other stands nearby wearing an orange safety helmet. Tools and branches are scattered on the ground around them.

 

Work began on the walled kitchen garden today in preparation for the next round of site surveys. It’s going to be fascinating to see what remains of the gardens history and what it can tell us about how the garden was developed and used across the last 300 years.  Needless to say there were more fungi.

A weathered brick pillar covered in moss and entwined with vines stands among dense, tangled undergrowth and bare branches in a forested area.

Several small brown mushrooms with light edges grow close together among damp soil, twigs, leaves, and small stones in a forest setting. A green fern frond is visible in the upper left corner.
